What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to medically induced relaxation techniques used during dental procedures. For patients who feel anxious or nervous about receiving dental care, sedation can make the experience more relaxing and less stressful. Sedation may also be recommended for procedures that are complex or invasive to help make the patient more comfortable.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

  • Reduced stress. Sedation can take the stress out of dental procedures, allowing you to feel relaxed and calm.
  • Improved safety. Dental procedures are safer when the patient is relaxed rather than tense.
  • Increased efficiency. Dentists can accomplish more in a shorter period of time when patients are under sedation.
  • Cure dental anxiety. For some patients, just one experience with sedation can cure their dental anxiety so that they no longer fear dental procedures.
  • Get the dental care you need. Some patients are so afraid of the dentist that they fail to get the dental care they need and their oral health suffers. Sedation makes it possible for you to get necessary dental work done.

Sedation Options We Offer

  • Nitrous Oxide. Nitrous oxide is a gas that you breathe through a mask placed over your nose. As you breathe it in for a few minutes a calm, relaxed feeling takes effect. You may feel a tingling sensation in your fingers and toes. It wears off in just a few minutes of breathing regular room air.
  • Conscious Oral Sedation. An oral sedative can be prescribed for you to take before your appointment. If you take it about an hour before your procedure, it should have had plenty of time to take effect. You may feel sleepy or groggy while under oral sedation, but you will still be conscious. You may not remember much about your time in the dental office.
  • IV Sedation. IV Sedation/General Anesthesia, uses medications to allow the patient to go to sleep while receiving dental treatment. Surgical patients or patients with high levels of anxiety, or special needs may benefit from IV Sedation/General Anesthesia. The doctor can discuss the benefits of general anesthesia and help patients determine if it is the best choice for them.

Are You a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Do you dread going to the dentist? Do you feel tense, stressed, or otherwise uncomfortable? You don’t have to feel this way every time you have an upcoming dental appointment. Sedation can help you feel more relaxed and calm. Even if you’re not normally nervous about going to the dentist, if you have a new and different procedure coming up that you’re not comfortable with, sedation may be helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Can I drive myself home after sedation?
You will need someone you trust to drive you to and from your appointment if you take an oral sedative because it can take a few hours to wear off. If you have nitrous oxide you will be able to drive yourself, because it wears off quickly.
Does sedation require needles?
Most types of sedation offered in our office do not require the use of needles. The exception to this is IV Sedation. Our office does offer IV Sedation and this type of sedation does include the use of needles.
Is nitrous oxide safe?
Nitrous oxide is safe for most patients. It takes effect quickly and wears off quickly, with minimal side effects. Patients with respiratory conditions should discuss these with their dentist prior to your appointment.
Can you still feel pain while under sedation?
Nitrous oxide and oral sedatives do not eliminate pain, but they may reduce your awareness of it. Local anesthesia is typically still used along with sedation for best results, but less may be required.
Do I have to request sedation?
You can talk to your dentist about your anxiety regarding dental procedures and the subject of sedation may come up. You can also request sedation if you think it would be helpful.
