How Long Do Veneers Last?
Dental veneers are a very popular cosmetic dental treatment. Here’s what to know about the differences between porcelain and composite veneers, including tips for making your veneers last as long as possible.
Differences Between Composite Veneers and Porcelain Veneers
Both composite and porcelain veneers are custom-made for each individual. Unlike prefabricated instant veneers, composite and porcelain porcelain veneers will be made in a lab to fit perfectly over your teeth. Both are cemented to the teeth and deemed a permanent treatment because once you get veneers you’ll need to keep them forever.
However, there are many differences between porcelain and composite veneers. Porcelain veneers are the gold standard, but are more expensive than composite veneers. Not only do they last for at least a decade, but they are incredibly strong making them resistant to chipping. Porcelain veneers are also more resistant to staining.
Composite veneers can be expected to last about half of the time of porcelain veneers, and they are unfortunately more likely to chip or stain. This is because the composite material is more porous than porcelain. However, composite veneers are typically only about one-half of the cost of porcelain veneers.
Tips for Making Your Veneers Last as Long as Possible
Practicing good oral hygiene, including twice daily brushing, daily flossing, and dental exams and cleanings every six months is the best way to maintain your veneers. However, following these tips can also help ensure your veneers last.
- Reduce sugary snacks and beverages
- Avoid using your teeth as tools (tearing tags, opening bottles, etc)
- Do not chew pens, fingernails, ice, hard candies
- Wear a mouthguard when playing sports
- If you grind your teeth, get fitting for a custom night guard from your dentist
- Limit staining foods and beverages (coffee, tea, red wine, dark juices, sauces, gravy)
- Do not smoke, vape, or use smokeless tobacco in any form
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush
